The Outlawz Greetings Card Celebrate Summer Challenge

Another funday Monday. Or is it? Inquiring minds want to know. Did you have a good weekend? I did, so I hope you did as well. (Our daughter came over and catered an anniversary dinner for us on Saturday night, although the actual anniversary was on May 9. This was the first time we could get together. And she is a great cook and made a fabulous Indian meal. YUM!)

For this week's Outlawz Challenge, we want you to create something to celebrate summer, and be sure to add a greeting! And this week we have Eureka/QKR as sponsors:

Eureka

This should be a fairly easy challenge for y'all. Hope to see lots of entries this week!

Before I get to my card, I want to take a moment to add some vacation memories. This is really for my benefit, not yours. I need to blog about it, so that I don't forget. I suppose I could write it down in a diary, but I couldn't easily add the photos; so that isn't really an option for me. You will just have to skip ahead if you don't want to reminisce with me.

I have a bucket list. I didn't when I was young, but when you get to be my age, and time is getting shorter, it is easy to think of the things you wish you could experience before the time is up. Seeing whales was on my bucket list, and I was able to check that off. I also had swimming with dolphins on my list. As it turned out, I was able to check that off as well, thanks to Dolphin Encounters in the Bahamas.

When we decided to go to Atlantis, I checked into the activities there. Imagine my thrill when I found out that they had a dolphin encounter at the resort! Finally, I could experience interacting with dolphins. Well, hold on there, Buckaroo. Not so fast. I did my research and found out that the encounter at Atlantis was not really that exciting for many of its adult participants. So I researched further, and found that Dolphin Encounters on Salt Cay, or Blue Lagoon Island as they call it, was very well-received by the grown-ups. And, in spite of what you believe, I do count myself as an adult.

So we made the arrangements ahead of time to have a swim with the dolphins. A swim is different than an encounter. It is longer, more involved, and costs a LOT more! I definitely wanted to do the swim, so Gary told me to sign us up. He didn't need to tell me twice! I signed us up for the first Wednesday that we were there.

On the first Monday of our trip, we noticed that the forecast was for rain on Wednesday, so we called and changed our dolphin swim to Friday. Which was just as well, because it gave the incision on my shoulder more time to heal. Anyway, on Friday we were picked up by a very large catamaran. The trip was only 20 minutes, through mostly very calm water. So Gary didn't get seasick at all, which made us both very happy!

We were in the first group for the swim. They had us in a lecture area, so that we would learn enough about the dolphins to interact with them. Don't touch the dolphin below the belly-button; to touch, wax on and wax off; and never touch or feed a wild dolphin. Yes, there was more info; but, honestly, she talked so fast and had such a strong Bahamian accent, that it was really hard to understand her. We then proceeded to the locker area, where we put our valuables, and Gary and I got into our wetsuits. Then it was on to the life jackets. Which really didn't go too well for me. Because they tried one on me that was too small; then they told me to grab this other one, which mostly fit me. Unfortunately, no one tightened it just right, so it pretty much floated above my head while I was in the water. Which caused two problems--it made me float away from everything I was supposed to do, and it made me look really odd on video and in photos. As you will see below.

So our dolphin was Princess--their oldest at 45 years of age. She had been with them the longest. She was also pregnant--due sometime this fall. What??? Dolphin life expectancy in the wild is 25 years. And she's pregnant at 45? That would be a nightmare for a human being, much less a dolphin. I feel for her, I really do. Imagine raising a baby when your grandchildren are having kids. Just. isn't. right.

Anyway, Princess and her trainer are full of the devil. No, not literally; just figuratively. He had her splashing the crap out of us when we first got in the water. And you could tell she was having fun doing it. I was laughing like crazy, but, since we were in a salt-water lagoon, it did hurt to get the water in our eyes. I just turned my back to her. Laughing the whole time. Especially since I  kept floating away with myself. Due to that da** life jacket.

Each one of us--and there were a total of five--got to interact with Princess separately. We all got a kiss from her, we all got to kiss her on the chin, we all got to "dance" with her, (which was a riot: you hold onto her pectoral fins while she sings (?) along with her trainer and bounces you up and down), we all got to hug her--which was a wonderful experience. Until I floated away. Because of that da** life jacket. Oh, and we each got to take a fish from her mouth and then give it back to her. (Only he told me to put the fishtail in between my teeth and then let her grab it. And I actually started to do that--even had the fish touching my lips. YUCK. Then he laughed and said he was just kidding. I believe I called him a brat, though I certainly could have used a different name if there hadn't been other peeps around.) And we each had a little bit different moment with her. Mine was to touch her teeth, while her mouth was stretched wide open. Let me tell you, dolphin teeth are extremely sharp! It takes a lot of trust to put your fingers in an animal's mouth. But I still have mine, so I guess it was well-placed trust.

And then there was the foot-push. Which Princess didn't do--she took her leave of us by turning upside-down in the water and waving goodbye with her tail fin. It was really cute! Then her daughter and granddaughter and a baby dolphin came into our lagoon for the foot-push. (Although I am not sure why the baby was there, as it just seemed to get in the way.)

Dolphins weigh over 400 pounds. And there is one bottle-nose on each of your feet--so that's 800 pounds of pressure pushing you forward. I know they can get up to 25 miles per hour, though I have no idea how fast we actually went. I just know that it was a wonderful rush to zoom across that lagoon half out of the water. And I also know that it really does hurt your feet, although the pain goes away fairly quickly. At least for me it did. But not so much for Gary. Poor baby. His "push" was only halfway across the lagoon--he must have bent his knees, because the dolphins backed down quickly. (For me they waited until the whistle blew, because I wanted the entire ride!) He told me that the toes on his good foot felt sprained, and it hurt his "bad" foot, (the one he broke in 2010 and had surgery to repair), too. But he didn't tell the trainer this, and so he got a second push--which ended up being shorter than his first one. Apparently the baby dolphin went across his path, so he abruptly bent his knees. Again. Oh well, at least I had fun with it--though you wouldn't know it to see the expression on my face. (Looks can be deceiving.)

All in all, I felt that the entire dolphin experience was worth every penny of the $185 per person that it cost. (Not to mention the ~$175 for the video & photos.) We got an entire hour's worth of dolphin interaction, which was more than I ever dreamed I would have. Now, if the trainer just hadn't mentioned the Sky Juice to Gary, it would have been perfect. But he did. And Gary promptly took me over to the beach area, plopped me down, and went and got us each a Sky Juice. OMG. Potent much?

Let's put it this way. Gary was thirsty. And all he had was the Sky Juice to drink. So he drank it. Quickly. Like, man, he gulped it down. And was smacked senseless. Well, almost anyway. I never did finish my drink. We were there for another two hours and I only drank half of mine--because I really wasn't too crazy about it. But Gary couldn't even go up to get his lunch for an hour after he finished his drink, because he couldn't walk. And once he did go get his food, he stayed right there, because he was afraid to walk back. So I didn't see him for almost another hour. My advice: don't ever drink a Sky Juice. You will be sorry if you do. Other than that, the day at the Dolphin Encounter was a definite success.

So here are some photos from that day:

And I can't believe I showed you all these photos of me with such gorgeous hair and sans make-up. But this was really my best-est day in the Bahamas. And now that I have thoroughly embarrassed myself, I will switch to my card for the week.

A friend of ours passed away in April, and I wanted to send a card to his widow, just to let her know we are thinking about her. So I used a QKR Stampede image called Picking Flowers. I printed her on MICBC and then colored her with Copics and Twin Touch Brush markers:

Skin: E000, TTR131, TTYR133, TTR139
Hair: E13, E15, E18
Hat, Basket, Shoes: YR21, YR24
Dress, Bloomers, & Socks: YG00, TTGY48, TTGY163
Flowers: RV00, RV52, RV55, R22, R24, R27, YR000, YR18
Shadow: W0, W1

I chose DP from the SEI Sunny Day collection, and I paper-pieced her pinafore with it. My CS is from Stampin' Up, as is the sentiment. The fishtail dies were from MFT. And that's it for this week.

Hope you join us in our challenge. Be sure to catch all the fun creations by my talented teamies. And have a wonderful week!

Jellypark Friends Marvelously Masculine Challenge

The challenge upon us at JP this fortnight is to make a card for a guy, young or old. Since Father's Day is right around the corner, it seems like a great time to make a card for your dad. And Jellypark has the perfect image available in the store right now: Father and Children. It is so cute, and is the new JP charity stamp--all proceeds from the sale of this stamp will go to charity.

Claire also has some really cute sentiments in the store for a Father's Day card, so be sure to check them out, too. Creating with her images has been so much fun for me.

Before I get to my card this week, I am going to add a few more tidbits about the Bahamian trip we took last month. I hit the high points about our food, so won't mention that again. Except to say that we had Starbucks there, and it did cost twice as much as it does here. Terrible thing to be addicted to their Chai Lattes when you are in a foreign country, huh? Oh, and they get New Zealand butter, which I found fascinating. To ship butter all that way--there must be a great deal in that somehow for both countries! Don't get me wrong--the butter tasted like butter. Fancy that. It was just odd to see a New Zealand label on it. Also, if I didn't mention it before, this was my first trip outside the U.S. I was a foreign-traveling-virgin. Hmmm....there must be a better way to say that. I haven't seen my actual you-know-what for a few decades.

If you ever get to Atlantis Paradise Island, you will find the grounds are just fantastic, beautifully maintained, and the buildings are all so different. It is a fantabulous family vacation spot. So much for the kids to see and do. Great fresh air, (just don't go during rainy season), 3 beautiful beaches with gorgeous turquoise water and white sands, and 11 swimming pools. There are 14 water lagoons for various water sports and fish/animal exhibits, 18 water slides that will apparently make you scream, (no we didn't try them, but we could hear the peeps that did loud and clear), a teen center, tons of activities for the young-uns, and a fascinating aquarium, called the Ruins at Atlantis. Oh, you can even snorkel the  "Ruins" if you'd like--though I really didn't want to get in the water with the sharks and the sting rays. There was a giant ray, whose stinger was either broken off or amputated. Not sure if that was a safety precaution, as we didn't do the actual underground "tour" to hear all the details. We walked through the exhibit by ourselves, so that we could take our time taking photos.

Here are some shots of the buildings and grounds:

Here's a shot of one water slide. I managed to catch the person going down it. And you know how? Because I waited for the scream, so I knew when to snap the shot. Almost everyone coming down this slide announced it that way.

Here's a couple of shots of the Lobby at the Royal Towers, where the smoke-laden casino is, as well as the Dig, where the aquarium is:

Here's the area leading down to the Dig:

And here are some shots of the aquarium. There are some gorgeous fish, two schools of them, (one for the apparently horizontally-challenged), some ray photos, a shark or two, bio-luminescent jellyfish, a crazy lobster grouping, a seahorse, some really ugly eels, a coral grouping, and a couple of fish that look just like Gary and I when we argue.

Did you see Nemo's family up there? Looks like he was pretty prolific to me.

And here's the view we had from our balcony. Not the prettiest, but at least we got to look at water!

More photos another day. Hope that wasn't too many for you. (And if it was, tough.) (Ooooh, my evil twin is back. I kind of missed her, didn't you?) We had more photos, believe me, but thought this selection would give you an idea of how cool the Dig is. There was actually a gift shop down there, too, with very expensive gifts.

Now to my card for the new JP challenge. I love this image, called Knight and Dragon. It appeals to the sci-fi side of me. I printed them on MICBC and then colored them with my Twin Touch Brush and Copic markers:

Skin: E000, TTR131, TTYR133, TTR139
Hair: E15
Armor: W1, W3, W4, W5
Glove & Pennant: YR21, YR23, YR27
Dragon: BG70, BG72, BG75, V000, V12, V15

I chose some DP from the Basic Grey Plumeria collection, and paired it with CS from Stampin' Up. I used a Stampin' Up sentiment from the Embrace Life collection. My background DP was distressed with my Zutter tool. I inked the fishtails with some SU inks. I added a bit of burlap and a few die cuts made with the following dies: MFT Fishtail Flag Stax, MFT Mini Film Strip, MFT Mini Pennant, MFT Mini Tabs Foursome, and LaLa Land Crafts Folding Banner. I stapled the mini tab with a mini stapler. And then I called it a day.

I am looking forward to your entries for this challenge. Please check out both the challenge creations and the new release creations by my fabulous teammates--who are also super-sweet and supportive. Love this group! Now go have a great weekend. That's an order. From the little knight.

The Outlawz Greetings Card "Stars and/or Stripes" Challenge

Well, it must be Monday since it's another challenge at The Outlawz Greetings Card group. Or vice versa. This week we want to see stars and/or stripes on your card. And don't forget your greeting, (which I sometimes almost do. But then, I have an excuse. I'm getting old. Oh, who am I kidding. I am old). This week we are again sponsored by Bugaboo Stamps:

I naturally used a Bugaboo image on my card this week. She is called "Raggedy Angel--String of Stars". I thought she was pretty cute--and certainly perfect for this challenge.

Before I get to the description of my card, I will bore you to tears with some more vacation memories. I'm even adding a few photos for your viewing pleasure.

So let's see. I told you about the flights from he**. I am such a crabby old lady, aren't I? Don't answer that. At least not in writing. OK, so the first day we got checked into our timeshare. We stayed in the Harborside Resort at Atlantis. We got an extra 4 days, since we checked in during low season. Of course, we had rain for all four days, so be careful what you wish for.

Our timeshare was clean and spacious. We had a living area, dining area, full kitchen, bedroom, bathroom with two sinks (yay), and a balcony. We asked for a harbor view--again, be careful what you wish for--which we did get. We found out later that night that being on the harbor could be quite noisy. The marina was just a bit east of us, and cruises were leaving at all hours of the day and night. They all played loud music--our favorite was the Booze Cruise. Each of the BC boats were packed with standing room only, and the participants were dancing up and down. Bobbing you might say, with their hands in the air. Because the boat dude told them to raise their hands in the air. Several times. Each cruise. Every day. Every night. Over and over. The one saving grace for the rainy days--there were not many cruises--certainly not the night-time Booze Cruises. Hallelujah.

We went to Bimini's for dinner the first night after we got settled. And the food was pretty decent, as I recall. But the best part was the dessert--omg! Guava duff. Absolutely scrumptious. I can't even describe it, except that it was the texture of a cinnamon roll, but like a cake, with lots of guava inside it and covered with a fantastic sweet sauce. I guess it is complicated to make, but someday I may try one. It was too, too utterly delicious. We stopped back there for another meal later in the trip--do ya think we had the guava duff again? Duh.

Yes, yes, I did gain 3 pounds while we were there. But, remember, it rained the last four days, so I didn't get any exercise at the end of the trip. And that's why I gained the weight. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it. It had nothing to do with guava duff, or rum drinks, or my butter-drenched lobster, which I had at Cafe Martinique--a Jean-Georges Vongerichten restaurant. Oh, was that lobster sweet and yummilicious! Haven't had lobster that good since I was a kid. This was soooo fantastic! (A bit pricey at $68, gasp, but I decided I deserved it, for no reason known to mankind or mouse.) And the salad I had before the lobster was also wonderful--such a great dressing on it! I thought I had photos of our entrees, but somehow we managed to do videos of them instead. Oh well....at least you can see my fabulous salad! And I ate every bit of it. BTW, the restaurant interior was really elegant, with a very high pitched ceiling, which doesn't show up in the photo.

We also ate at the Bahamian Club. Would you believe there was a screaming little monster in there all during our meal? And he was being quite ignored by his parents, dang it. I thought he could have been seated elsewhere. Like outside. At the beach. On another island. In another hemisphere. Perhaps even on another planet. Anyway, though the atmosphere was anything but relaxing due to said child, the food and service were wonderful. We splurged on jumbo shrimp for an appetizer, that was flavorful & delicious, and fabulous filet mignon for dinner that night. The filet was just perfectly cooked and served with a couple of superb sauces--one a peppercorn and one a Bearnaise. Wish we could have enjoyed eating it more, but constant screaming kind of puts a damper on things. And we didn't take photos of our dishes there. (Shrugs.)

Oooh, we tried conch chowder--which tastes almost exactly like Manhattan clam chowder. (Found out it's pronounced conk.) And, we loved it--had it a couple of times at a couple of restaurants, served with Johnny cake, (which I also loved). I was really afraid to try conch--it is a snail, after all, albeit an ocean floor one. And snails just do not appeal to me for some odd reason. Could it be because they slime their way across the terrain? Ick. But this snail was really, really good! BTW, we were told to try a place in Nassau to eat for some really inexpensive & authentic Bahamian food--which we had planned to do at the end of our trip--but the rain cancelled that for us! Sigh. Gary made eggs & toast instead. Which actually tasted quite good when we were watching the rain pouring down outside.

The best meal we had overall was at Bobby Flay's Mesa Grill. He has one in New York and another in Las Vegas. If you ever get the chance to go, do it, by all means! It is fantastic southwestern-type food! We had their goat cheese queso fundido with chips and their shrimp & roasted garlic tamale for our appetizers. Incredibly delicious! Then the New Mexican spice rubbed pork tenderloin was recommended as a signature dish for dinner. So we both had it--that meat just melted in your mouth. So flavorful & tender. Oh, yum! And for dessert we shared the sticky toffee pudding with salted cajeta and tres leches ice cream. We were so full we actually left a bite or two of that wonderful dessert. And then we rolled on out of there. (Forgot to take a photo of the dessert. Oops.)

Have a funny story about the dress code, too. But I'll save that for another post. For now, I will just get to my card for the week.

I printed my image on MICBC. Then I colored it with my Copics and Twin Touch Brush markers:
Skin: E000, TTR131, TTYR133, TTR139
Hair: E11, E13, E15, E18
Wings: E40, E41, E42, E43
 Dress: BV23, BV25, BV29
Heart: R08

I chose DP from the Bo Bunny Liberty collection and paired it with Stampin' Up CS. I distressed my DP with my Zutter Distrezz-It-All. I added some stars cut with my Spellbinders Classic Star dies, some jute ribbon, cheesecloth, a bow, a safety pin, and a MIC chipboard corner. My sentiment was created with a Dymo Label Maker. Voila! My card is done. And so am I.

Do check out the great S&S creations by my teamies! And please join us in the challenge. We'd love to see what you create! And have a great week!

The Outlawz Greetings Card Weddings and Anniversaries Challenge/Ed & Ellie's Card

This week we are challenging you to create a card for an anniversary or a wedding. We'd like you to show off your silver or gold cards for couples. As luck would have it, our friends, Ed and Ellie, are celebrating their anniversary this month. So I was able to make a card for them that fit the challenge.

And, Ellie, if you are reading this, stop! Do not pass Go, do not collect $200. Well, OK, you can collect $200 if you can find it. But don't read or look below if you don't want to spoil the surprise. OK? OK.

And, before I get to my card, I just want to catch you up on a few things. Gary and I went to Atlantis, Paradise Island, The Bahamas, on May 19th. We returned on the 30th. We had a wonderful first week. However, the extra days we spent there were so wet and rainy that I could hardly wait to get back to sunny, dry Arizona. OMG! I just don't "do" rain anymore. Especially if I am not at home where I can at least make a card or two. But sitting in a time-share suite, nice as it was, is not my idea of a good time for hours-on-end.

On the bright side, I did get a lot of reading done. I finished six books on our trip, and started the seventh on our plane ride home. And I haven't done that much reading in a very long time! That was delicious!

Speaking of plane rides, I think we had two that were sent from you-know-where. (And I am not talking about Heaven.) 'K, so the first one was delayed. We were supposed to take off at 5:25 a.m. Which meant that we had to be at the airport in the wee hours of the morning to get through security, etc. Fine. But when we checked our baggage we found out that there was a delay. Apparently, our pilot called in sick the night before. Due to regulations, they could not call in a new pilot until 4:00 a.m. And then he had two hours to get to the airport. Which meant he didn't need to be there until 6:00 a.m. Well, he didn't get there until 6:15, so we took off almost an hour late. And we only had an hour between connecting flights. Oh, help. I was fretting that one all the way to Charlotte.

But it gets better. There were the obligatory children on our flight. I have to say, the older I get, the less I want whiny, crying children in my vicinity. Just doesn't work for me anymore. Especially on planes, because you can't get away from them. The kids, I mean, not the planes. Well, I suppose you could get away from either of them. But it would take one mighty long step, and the landing would really, really hurt. Anyway, one couple got on with two pint-sized ones. Wouldn't you just know they sat across the aisle from us. The older one, a girl, was fairly well-behaved, for the most part. But the little boy, who must have been around two or younger, was a little monster. Crying, fussing, yelling for most of the trip. The parents kept passing him back and forth. I thought there was a nice spot out on the wing for him, but I didn't mention that, shy flower that I am. Oh, and they gave him a car to play with--you know, one of those fairly heavy metal ones--bigger than a Matchbox. And he threw it, barely missing the guy sitting in front of us. At least the parents had the decency to reprimand the kid and take the car away. Good grief. And thank heavens I have those wonderful noise-reduction headphones that I can play music on--they really help to drown out the kiddie noise.

BTW, we had a really rough, bumpy flight to Charlotte. Seems we were traveling through a lot of storms that were hitting the South--the day before Oklahoma was hit so hard.

Anyway, I was sure we were going to miss our connecting flight in Charlotte. Ah, not so much. Seems they had a problem with a door on that plane, which was being repaired when we got to the gate. I was not sure if that was a good thing or a bad thing at first. I mean, I really wasn't ready for the door to fly off during the flight, causing depressurization of the cabin and me being sucked out of the plane. That was never on my bucket list. But, due to the repair delay, we were able to make the connecting flight; and it got us to Nassau, sans screaming children and bumpiness. Which made me a very happy camper.

And our flight back from the Bahamas to Charlotte was a good one, too! I expected a rough flight since it was raining on the way up; but it actually wasn't too bad. And then our flight to Phoenix got re-routed, due to some storms, I think. Which made for a fairly smooth, although longer, trip for us.

However...as we were waiting to board our plane to Phoenix, (with lots of kiddies on it, btw), there was a small child, about two years old, that was screaming at the top of her lungs. Everybody turned to look to see if that kid was on our flight. And guess what. She was. She and her older brother were traveling with their mommy--who had no help in case of trouble. Oh, yeah, and there was plenty of trouble. The little boy was really pretty good and slept quite a bit of the way. But that little she-devil screamed for at least two solid hours as loudly as she could. And kicked the seat in front of her. I know this because, again, they were sitting right across the aisle from us. (Yes, it could have been worse. They could have been right behind us. Thank heavens for small favors. Right?)

Gary says it's my fault. Because I dread having naughty kids around us, I draw them to us like a magnet. And, he is probably right. I was so grateful when that little munchkin finally fell asleep. But then a little one two rows behind us awoke about a half hour before we landed. And screamed for the entire half hour. Sigh. I am sure that the air pressure on their little ears has a lot to do with the crying. I just wish their parents would pick another method of travel for them. At least on the days that I fly. Is that too much to ask? Really?

Alrighty, then, enough about the plane rides. I will tell you more about the trip on future posts. Consider yourselves warned. (Snort!)

Oh, and if you decide to take a trip to Atlantis, be prepared for the taxi ride out there from the airport. They drive on the wrong side of the street, with their steering wheels on the wrong side of the vehicles. (At least for us Americans.) And they drive fast. And they barely squeeze by the traffic. And they stop on a dime. So, it's kind of like taking a ride at the amusement park. And it'll cost you $35 before tip. But much cheaper than renting a car, which we really didn't need, as we used shuttle buses on the island. Just fyi.

Okey dokey. For my card this week, I decided to use a sketch from CLP, #59:

I chose a Sassy Studios image, Immortal Love, for my card, which I printed on MICBC. My DP is from the MME Lost & Found Sunshine collection, and my CS is from Core'dinations. I colored my image, (four times, believe it or not--still not pleased with the results, but I finally said enough is enough), with Copics and Twin Touch Brush markers:
Skin: E000, E00, E11, E21, R20
Her hair & pants, his shirt: YR20, YR21, YR23, YR24
His hair & pants, her sweater: E29, E33, E34, E35, E37, E39
Eyes: E34, TTB67
Shadowing: TTB182

I distressed my paper with my Zutter Distrezz-It-All and Stampin' Up ink. My die cuts were made with the following dies: Spellbinders Labels 4, Memory Box Victorian Frame, and Cheery Lynn Bow & Bell. I also added a bit of Stampin' Up Vanilla Flower Trim. I created the sentiment on my computer. And that's it. Pretty short & sweet after all that grousing about our travel, huh? Good thing.

Do check out the creations by my talented teamies. And then, please join us with a card of your own! Really looking forward to seeing what you create! Have a great week.
